The work of Minsk City Committee of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection in controlling the environment of Minsk
Minsk City Committee of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection was established on 29 November, 1988.
The Committee's activities are versatile, but all areas of work serve one major purpose – to ensure high quality of people's lives. And it largely depends on the purity of air, water, rational use of natural resources.
The main tasks of the Committee are:
• control in the field of environmental protection on the territory of Minsk;
• providing state bodies, other organizations and citizens of Minsk with information about the state of the environment, measures for its protection and improvement, promoting environmental awareness;
• implementation of environmental policy and integrated environmental management on the territory of Minsk, etc.
During the last years the emission of pollutants into the atmospheric air from stationary sources in Minsk is steadily decreasing. But more than 85% of the pollutants are emitted with the exhaust gases of vehicles, so the following measures are taken to reduce pollution in this direction: increasing the share of electric transport, the construction of new metro lines, the development of cycling, etc.
Monitoring of the atmospheric air of the capital is performed by 12 stationary stations. Monitoring data shows that the overall picture of air quality in Minsk is quite good.

A positive trend in reducing the amount of abstraction of groundwater and surface water, waste water, specific water consumption for household and drinking needs remains in Minsk. Monitoring of hydrochemical regime of rivers and reservoirs is held monthly according to the National system of environmental monitoring. The results of observations of the state of surface water indicate a relatively favorable situation.

One of the main principles of the state policy in the field of waste management is the priority use of waste in relation to their neutralization or disposal.
The municipal organizations of the capital annually update and install containers for separate waste collection. The collection of waste batteries, mercury containing lamps and household appliances, released from service, is organized.
Currently the city has 4 waste sorting lines at the unitary enterprise "Ekores" and Waste recycling and sorting plant in the area of the existing landfill for municipal solid waste "Trostenetsky" of the unitary enterprise "Spetskommunavtotrans". Waste disposal is done at landfills, one of them is located in Minsk and one - in Minsk region.
Within the boundaries of Minsk - the largest industrial centre of our country – there are four specially protected natural areas of the republican meaning:
• The Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus;
• The "Lebyazhy" Republican Biological Reserve;
• "The Park of stones" - Geological Nature Monument of the Republican Importance;
• The "Stiklevo" Republican Biological Reserve.
In 2017 several botanic nature monuments of local importance appeared in Minsk.

Conducting the city's environmental events and activities, promotions and contests has become an annual tradition in Minsk:
• Graffiti Contest on Environmental Issues;
• Children's holiday, dedicated to the World Environment Day (June 5);
• European Mobility Week (16 - 22 September) and the International Car Free Day (22 September);
• Photo Contest on Environmental Issues "Green Minsk", etc.
